In 1975, a group of California physicians got together to explore ways to manage the escalating cost of one of the most important types of insurance affecting their lives and careers – medical professional liability coverage. This astute group of individuals formed the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP), a California consumer cooperative.

Our organization is physician owned and governed. Our products and services equip members with the best tools to meet the business challenges of running a medical practice.

The Mutual Protection Trust (MPT) is our core product. Available only to CAP members, MPT offers superior medical professional liability protection for California’s preferred doctors. Established in 1977, MPT is now a market leader in the California medical professional liability arena. This interindemnity arrangement protects more than 11,000 of the state’s finest physicians. The financial stability of MPT is so solid that A.M. Best Company has assigned it an A+ (Superior) Rating five years in a row.
