In today's complex healthcare world, the exposures faced by doctors are not limited to the practice of medicine. Physicians must also consider their risks as business professionals--risks which are not protected under medical professional liability contracts.

That's why CAP created an insurance agency, Medical Risk Management Insurance Services (MRMI). MRMI is dedicated solely to meeting physicians' business insurance needs. This agency provides products and services uniquely superior to outside sources. The coverages, available both to CAP Members and non-member physicians as well as healthcare organizations, are provided through alliances with quality insurance providers:

Workers' Compensation Coverage. This program provides savings up to 50% off of current market prices with easy enrollment by telephone. Small practices benefit from the low minimum premium of $400 per year. Medical groups benefit from deeply discounted rates.

Business Insurance (Property & Liability). This program combines the broadest coverage enhancements currently available to California physicians with discounts that are not available through other insurance agencies. Quotations and enrollment are handled over the telephone in minutes. Program highlights include:

  • Low Annual Minimum Premiums
  • Premises Liability Limits of $2MM/$4MM
  • Expanded Property Coverages

Managed Care Errors and Omissions. This special coverage is for physicians who are associated with IPAs, medical groups, or are involved in the coordination of care systems. It can cover such specific areas of liability as Vicarious Liability, alleged Negligence of Utilization Review Management, alleged Negligent Credentialing and Peer Review, allegations arising out of Quality Assurance, and certain administration and management issues.

Directors and Officers Liability Coverage (D&O). If a doctor is a Director, Officer or Partner of a medical corporation, his or her personal assets are at risk if faced with uninsured allegations of imprudent management, suits by employees, panel members, payers, shareholders as well as anti-trust or civil rights allegations. Directors and Officers Liability Coverage provides insurance for these and other risks.

Note: The above Managed Care Errors and Omissions Coverage and the Directors and Officers Liability Coverage can be combined onto a single policy for comprehensive protection at a lower cost. Please ask us for details.

Specific Medical Errors and Omissions Coverage. Physicians serving in "moonlighting" and/or subcontracting capacities may not have coverage while performing such services as Medical Director, Utilization Review, Workers' Compensation File Review, Consulting, Expert Witness Testimony, or Benefit Determination. Customized insurance products can "carve out" these specific exposures to provide only the needed coverages.

Employer Practices Liability Coverage. Defending against a non-meritorious employment-related claim-such as discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, failure to promote, or creating a hostile workplace-can be financially crippling. Furthermore, a physician may have liability exposure even without any actual employees. Insurance products and risk management programs are available to minimize these risks at attractive pricing.
