PROGRAMS FOR MEMBERS
In continued support of physicians protected by Mutual Protection Trust (MPT), Membership Services has many coverage programs and options to ensure that your practice is accurately covered. Below are descriptions of these programs, some of which could lower your assessments.
To view and print the application associated with the program, please click on the highlighted name. Not all programs will have an application. If you are unable to view and print, please contact Membership Services at 213-576-8555, a representative will send the application to you via e-mail, fax or mail.
Part-time Practice Application – For physicians who work 20 hours or less per week (16 hours per week for anesthesiologists) this program will reduce your assessments up to 50 percent over a three year period.
Risk Class Reduction Application – Physicians who reduce their practice to a lower level within their specialty (e.g. from obstetrics and gynecology to gynecology surgery) will reduce their assessments over a five year period (approximately 20 percent each year). Members age 55 and above with no open claims can immediately reduce to a lower risk class, bypassing the usual five year reduction process.
Retirement Status Application – Upon your full and complete retirement from the practice of medicine and the attainment of age 55, this application will provide you with tail coverage at not cost. Generally, your Initial Trust Deposit is refunded if it has been on deposit at least 10 years.
Non-Private Practice Status Application – (For members age 58 and older) For members who have ceased their private practice, but wish to continue practicing in certain non-private settings, MPT assessments can be waived. No MPT coverage is provided to the physician for this work, however if the member continues to pay CAP dues until such time as he decides to fully retire, tail coverage will be provided upon conversion to retirement status.
Disability Application – In the unfortunate event a CAP member becomes disabled and unable to practice medicine completely, the member will remain liable for all dues and assessments until the 90th consecutive day of disability. At this point, all monies paid by the member during the 90-day period are returned and the member is relieved of any further financial obligation until he again begins to practice.
Employee Coverage Application – The Mutual Protection Trust offers coverage for no charge for the following categories of employees: registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, medical assistants, technologists or technicians, or clerical employees. For an additional fee, coverage is available for nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Coverage for employees can be shared within the member’s limits of liability or can be separate upon request.
Entity Coverage Application – A member’s medical corporation or medical partnership may be provided coverage through MPT. Coverage is available on a shared or separate limit bases. If all physicians associated with the entity are MPT members and all paraprofessionals are covered by MPT, entity coverage on a shared limit basis is available at no cost. For those entities wanting a separate limit of liability, entity coverage is available for a fee.
Other Related Physicians Coverage Application – Coverage may be available for other physicians or entities related to a member’s practice. When coverage is granted, these physicians are entitled to claims defense and claims services.
Locum Tenens Coverage – Each member is provided with 30 days of locum tenens coverage at no charge. Beyond the initial 30 days of free coverage, a daily charge is incurred based on the member’s risk class. No application is required, just a copy of the locum physician’s CV along with his/her California medical license number and a listing of the dates the locum tenens will be working for the member.
Death – In the unfortunate event that a member passes away, the estate is provided with free tail coverage for the entire time that the member was covered by MPT. The Initial Trust Deposit is immediately refunded and the current year’s assessment is prorated to the month of death.
Termination of Membership – If a member decides to terminate coverage with MPT tail coverage can be requested. There are three ways to obtain this important coverage: 1. purchase tail coverage, 2. terminate but agree to remain liable for assessments for a period of at least three years, or 3. transfer the membership to a new physician joining MPT. Regardless of when membership is terminated, the member is still required to pay the full amount of the current year’s assessment.
