The Risk Management & Claims Hotline is a confidential 24-hour service available to members to report any incident, claim, summons, written or verbal complaint from a patient, or notice of intent to sue from an attorney. For your convenience, a list of reportable events that should be reported to CAP has been provided below.
In addition to reporting claims and incidents, the Hotline provides members answers for their urgent practice related questions. If a situation arises that calls for guidance on how best to handle an event, reduce your exposure, or manage the risks involved, CAP is here to help via the Hotline.
Reportable events:
- Unexpected death of a patient during hospitalization, treatment, or in close proximity to the time of their last office visit.
- Unexpected, severe complications arising during and/or after patient care or treatment, for example,
- Brain damage
- Quadriplegia
- Paraplegia
- Blindness
- Hemi paresis
- Non-preexisting conditions that negatively impact the patient’s lifestyle, prognosis, or longevity
- Surgical misadventures, such as:
- Wrong site or side of they body
- Retained foreign bodies (sponges, needles or surgical tools
- Blood product related events (not including allergic reactions)
- Type and cross mismatch
- Transmission of blood born pathogens (HIV or Hepatitis)
- In-office patient injuries
